Topic: Afghan Women Today |
| Many
of you have met Peggy Kelsey of The Afghan Women’s
Project at the luncheons and at other events and
many of you may have heard of her adventures and
exploits through the newsletter or other places.
Last spring, Peggy took the opportunity to visit
Afghanistan for the second time and spent 10 weeks
traveling the country, meeting women and documenting
their efforts, successes and failures. She has
amazing photographs and stories and first hand
knowledge of what the women believe, do and need
to support them.
Too much of what we “know” about women in middle
eastern countries, especially places like Afghanistan,
is colored through the reports from media, sensationalism,
hidden agendas and misconceptions. The intention
of the Afghan Women’s Project is to share with
western audiences the lives of repression and
hardship, as well as hopes and dreams, of Afghan
women (http://www.kelsey.net).
Peggy has graciously chosen to share her experiences,
stories, photos and knowledge with those of our
community in an intimate, salon format. This is
an opportunity to learn first hand what life is
like for these women and children, what organizations
are doing in the country, what the women themselves
are doing and what we can do, if anything, to
make a difference.
Peggy
Kelsey received degrees in social work
and education before undertaking extensive world
travels. A professional photographer and resident
of the Austin area since 1980, Peggy was privileged
to meet with a delegation of 14 Afghan women who
passed through Austin, Texas in the fall of 2002.
The strength, humor and resiliency of the women
she met was contrary to the media image (at the
time) of Afghan women as helpless victims. This
dichotomy inspired Peggy to create the Afghan
Women’s project and in August and September of
2003, Peggy spent 6 weeks in Afghanistan and returned
with portraits and stories of 40 Afghan women.
She has traveled around the country sharing her
exhibit and slide presentations. In April, of
‘07, she traveled to Jordan to do a similar project
with Iraqi refugee women and returned to Afghanistan
in the spring of 2010.

East
Austin Health Fair
The Anam Cara Foundation, Inc., in collaboration with the
Texas Department of Insurance will provide access to free
health screenings, immunizations, and health information.
The East Austin Health Fair will be held Saturday, July 25,
2009 from 2:00pm-6:00 pm at the Millennium Youth Entertainment
complex, 1156 Hargrave Street, Austin.
The goal of the health fair is to provide an opportunity
for under-served communities to access basic health screenings,
education, and information about available resources to improve
and support family health. Information will be gathered to
allow for better support programs to be developed and resources
allocated. Fun and entertaining activities will be available
for the whole family, as well as prizes, snacks and drinks.
In addition to The Anam Cara Foundation and the Texas Department
of Insurance, many other community organizations will be participating,
including The Community Health Initiative Unit, Mobile Health
Van Screening Program, the American Heart Association and
numerous private and public organizations, agencies and health
care providers.
In this economic time, many people are forced to forgo health
insurance and basic health care. This leads to many challenges
in the community. It is important to provide access to the
basic of health care to all our citizens and this health fair
is offering the opportunity for many underserved in our community
to access the basic services while having fun. The Millennium
Youth Entertainment center is available for games, and other
indoor activities during the hot weather as well as other
activities, such as face painting, juggling lessons and demonstrations,
balloon art and music. Complete details will be announced
as final arrangements are completed.
The Anam Cara Foundation and the Texas Department of Insurance
want to ensure as many people as possible are able to receive
access to the basic health care often unavailable and provide
access to resources. The Anam Cara Foundation works to create
supportive community environments to assist people, especially
women, to overcome limitations in their beliefs and life to
fulfill their potential in their life. This health fair is
designed to assist families reduce the stress burden and reach
their maximum potential.
Anam
Cara's Annual International Women’s Day Celebration
International Women’s Day has a long history, dating back
to the late 1800’s in the United States. However, until
1999, it was not a significant event in this country.
In 1999, the United Nations proclaimed March 8 to be a day
of celebration acknowledging contribution of women to our
way of life as a part of The Year of Women. Over 15
countries have declared March 8 to be a national holiday.
Many cities and towns across the United States have begun
creating celebrations to acknowledge the contributions of
women to their communities and way of life. In conjunction
with several other organizations, we offer a celebration each
year to recognize women in our community who have made a difference.
Anam Cara has celebrated International Women's
Day with an annual event since 2007.
