East
Austin Health Fair 2009
The First Annual East Austin
Free Community Health Fair was a success.
The First Annual East Austin Health Fair, held Saturday, July
25, at the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex was a wonderful
opportunity to meet new people and make a difference in the
community. The Anam Cara Foundation collaborated with the
Texas Department of Insurance and other organizations to provide
immunizations, free toothbrushes and toothpaste, spinal analysis,
chi gong demonstrations, yoga demonstrations and lots of free
information.
Lots of fun giveaways were provided by Dell. Hitz 107.7 provided
giveaways and broadcasts from the event. The Texas Juggling
Society gave demonstrations and free lessons to anyone willing
to try. Stephanie Lowe and Jane Irvin provided face painting,
which was a real hit with all the kids. And, to show you are
never to young to volunteer, our youngest volunteer (7 years
old) helped at the face painting table and was a very big
help.
The Department of Insurance is working with the Healthy Texas
program and was able to collect over 150 surveys to help create
a workable program. Many organizations donated items to be
given away to those completing the surveys, including: Blazer
Tag (passes for games), Target (back pack full of school supplies),
HEB ($50 and $100 gift cards), and an iPod Shuffle.
Additionally, healthy, simple and inexpensive recipes (kid
tested) were provided by Anam Cara and attendees could enter
to win baskets of food to make the recipes. The recipes and
the food were a big hit. Over 350 people attended the event,
which was covered by KXAN news. On behalf of the Anam Cara
Foundation and board, I want to say thank you to everyone
who volunteered, donated and helped make this event so successful.

Anam
Cara's Annual International Women’s Day Celebration 2009
International Women’s Day has a long history, dating back
to the late 1800’s in the United States. However, until
1999, it was not a significant event in this country.
In 1999, the United Nations proclaimed March 8 to be a day
of celebration acknowledging contribution of women to our
way of life as a part of The Year of Women. Over 15
countries have declared March 8 to be a national holiday.
Many cities and towns across the United States have begun
creating celebrations to acknowledge the contributions of
women to their communities and way of life. In conjunction
with several other organizations, we offer a celebration each
year to recognize women in our community who have made a difference.
Anam Cara has celebrated International Women's Day with an
annual event since 2007.

Women's
Circle of Self Discovery Annual Retreat 2009
Each year, after meeting together in community, the women
spend a weekend together sharing and exploring their relationships
with each other, what they have learned about themselves and
just plain having fun. each retreat is as different as the
women who attend it, but they are all filled with gifts and
surprises.
Anam Cara has attended an annual retreat since 2006.
